Proposed legislation would expose longtime bad actors in prescription drug supply chain

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the world’s largest HIV and AIDS healthcare provider, issued the following statement in support of U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vermont) and Bill Cassidy’s (R-Louisiana) proposed bill targeting pharmacy benefit managers’ bad practices:

“AHF welcomes the introduction of Senator Sanders’ and Senator Cassidy’s bill to pull back the curtain on the very secretive practices of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). For too long, PBMs have exploited their privileged position in the prescription drug supply chain, acting as money-grubbing middlemen. PBMs negotiate in bad faith with employers, health insurers, and public sector entities. This legislation will shine a light on PBMs corrupt practices and force them to show how they are pocketing rebates to benefit their bottom lines rather than improving health outcomes. It is a bipartisan transparency bill that requires all discounts to go to reducing patient cost, targets forced mail-order, and scrutinizes subsidiary collusion.”
