Nasal Spray Recalled by Pharmaceutical Company in California Due to Bacterial Contamination Concerns

By: WebWire

Last month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a pharmaceutical company in Ventura County voluntarily recalling one lot of a homeopathic over the counter (OTC) nasal spray used to help stop or reduce symptoms of snoring. The recall was initiated because of concerns over potential microbial contamination with Providencia rettgeri. The product was distributed online and through health food stores nationwide.

According to the recall notice:

This microorganism is rarely associated with human illness; however, in immunocompromised patients, the use of the recalled product could potentially result in severe or life-threatening adverse events such as bacteremia/sepsis, pneumonia, invasive fungal rhinosinusitis, or disseminated fungal infection. In non-immunocompromised patients, the use of the recalled product may result in infectious complications that are expected to be less severe and more readily responsive to treatment.

“Fortunately, at the time of the recall posting, the manufacturer had not had any reports of adverse events related to the product,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing's Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, we are dedicated to helping manufacturers, distributors, retailers and importers prevent these types of costly product recalls, and the health risks associated with contaminated products reaching consumers.”

With multiple laboratories in California, LA Testing provides microbial and chemical testing for a broad spectrum of contaminants, including opportunistic pathogens. Their product testing specialists also provide services such as shelf life testing, contamination source tracking, and sterility and sanitation validation.
