StockStory’s take

SoFi’s third quarter results were marked by significant revenue acceleration, driven by robust member and product growth, as well as expanding engagement across its financial services ecosystem. Management credited the company's ability to deliver broad-based product adoption and higher monetization per product as central to performance. CEO Anthony Noto emphasized that growth in personal, student, and home loan originations, along with fee-based businesses such as SoFi Money and Invest, contributed to the quarter’s momentum. Noto noted, “Our focus is simple. More members, more products, and more optimized revenue per product to create the most value for our shareholders over the long term.”

Looking ahead, SoFi’s raised full-year outlook is underpinned by management’s expectation for continued expansion in its member base, deeper product penetration, and stable revenue per product across its lending and financial services segments. Noto highlighted that the path to 2027 and beyond is tied to “more members using more products, generating more revenue per product,” with explicit goals to increase fee-based revenue mix and scale new offerings like SoFi Plus and Big Business Banking. CFO Chris Lapointe reinforced that planned growth into 2027 does not require additional capital, stating, “Our current capital position, in addition to our organic capital generation, is sufficient to fund our business and our planned growth.”

Key insights from management’s remarks

Management attributed the strong quarter to the combined impact of rapid member acquisition, increased cross-sell of products, and enhanced monetization strategies across both lending and financial services.

  • Member and product expansion: SoFi added 1.2 million new members, bringing its total to 17.1 million, and increased total products to 26.7 million—reflecting both successful new customer acquisition and deepening engagement from existing users.
  • Personal and home loan growth: Lending activity was broad-based, with personal loan originations reaching a record $12.6 billion and home loan products growing 50% year-over-year. Management noted that annualized lending revenue per product rose to approximately $942, underscoring improved monetization.
  • Fee-based revenue diversification: Fee-based businesses such as SoFi Money, Invest, and Relay saw continued strength. Fee revenue comprised 42% of total revenue, up from 39% last quarter, and management reiterated its goal of reaching a 50% fee-based revenue mix.
  • SoFi Plus engagement: The SoFi Plus subscription model is gaining traction, with 25% of subscribers adding a new product after joining. Noto described SoFi Plus as a key driver of cross-buy and recurring revenue, though acknowledged that Q3 subscriber growth was below expectations due to adjustments for fraudulent signups.
  • Technology platform transition: Technology platform segment revenue declined year-over-year due to a previously disclosed client exit, but excluding that client, revenue grew 18%. Management is focused on expanding issuer processing, payments, and banking core solutions for third parties, aiming for a return to 25% annual growth in steady state.

Drivers of future performance

SoFi’s outlook centers on scaling its member base, growing product engagement, and maintaining stable revenue per product, while navigating a shifting macroeconomic environment.

  • Growth in fee-based businesses: Management expects continued expansion in SoFi Money, Invest, and new segments like SoFi Plus to drive a higher mix of fee-based revenue, reducing reliance on lending and increasing revenue stability. Noto described the company’s aim to reach a 50% fee-based revenue mix as critical for long-term profitability.
  • Margin and capital discipline: Management projects that operating and net income margins will continue to expand as the company leverages its existing capital base and organic capital generation. Lapointe emphasized that 2027 growth plans are fully funded without external capital raises, and that improved risk-adjusted margins in lending and credit performance support durability.
  • Product innovation and segment diversification: The company is investing in early-stage businesses such as SMB lending, SoFiUSD, and Big Business Banking. Management believes these initiatives, along with ongoing enhancements in its technology platform and subscription services, will support cross-sell, higher customer lifetime value, and incremental revenue streams.

Catalysts in upcoming quarters

Going forward, our analysts will be monitoring (1) the pace and sustainability of member and product growth, especially as management pushes toward 100 million products by 2030, (2) the mix shift toward fee-based revenue and margin implications, and (3) the scale-up of newer businesses such as SMB lending and SoFi Plus. The performance of the technology platform and progress in cross-selling will also be important indicators of execution.

SoFi currently trades at $16.81, up from $14.47 just before the earnings. Is the company at an inflection point that warrants a buy or sell? See for yourself in our full research report (it’s free).
