UK Glioblastoma Donations: GoFundMe For Urgent Brain Cancer Treatment Launched

A woman in England has launched a £100,000 fundraiser to secure private glioblastoma treatment for her partner, underscoring gaps in NHS cancer care provision.

-- Asta Pratapaviciene is seeking £100,000 through GoFundMe to finance private medical treatment for her partner, Raimondas, who was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma—an aggressive form of brain cancer. The new campaign has drawn attention to the limitations of glioblastoma treatment options available through the National Health Service (NHS).

While the NHS provides standard care involving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, access to emerging therapies and clinical trials remains limited. As a result, patients without the means to pursue private alternatives may face restricted treatment choices or diminished survival prospects.

According to national cancer statistics, glioblastoma affects approximately 5 per 100,000 people annually in England. Between 2013 and 2018, over 15,000 cases were recorded. Data indicates that only 29 percent of patients receive comprehensive treatment combining surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, while 21 percent receive no treatment. The median survival rate across all patient groups is 7 months, rising to 16 months among those who undergo multimodal therapy.

In a statement, Pratapaviciene described the emotional toll of the diagnosis and the urgency behind the fundraising effort.

"We met eight years ago and built a life together after both overcoming difficult divorces," she said. "We were planning our future together when everything changed overnight with this heartbreaking diagnosis. The specialized private treatment he needs targets his specific cancer, but it's beyond what we can afford. Traditional treatment options aren't enough for his condition."

Pratapaviciene emphasized that Raimondas is still full of life, dreams, and love, and neither of them is ready to give up hope.

To date, the "You're My Only Hope" GoFundMe campaign has received more than 160 donations, totaling over £6,000. The funds will go toward a personalised treatment plan not offered under public healthcare.
