Some of life’s most important questions do not have immediate answers. For Thomas Cameron Bowers Jr., those questions became part of a lifelong spiritual journey that ultimately inspired his memoir, Ask in Prayer.

The book Ask in Prayer explores what it means to seek God amid uncertainty, change, disappointment, and discovery. Drawing on experiences spanning childhood and adulthood, Bowers presents a personal account of the moments that challenged his beliefs and the experiences that continued to draw him toward a deeper understanding of prayer.

One of the earliest experiences described in the memoir began with a childhood prayer. Bowers hoped to receive the role of Amahl in a Christmas production and prayed for the opportunity. When another child was chosen, he was left questioning why his prayer had not been answered. The situation changed when a singing teacher moved to Oroville and began preparing him for the same production. After months of lessons and rehearsals, Bowers eventually performed the role.

For him, the experience became an early lesson in patience and perspective. What appeared to be a disappointment eventually became an opportunity that arrived through an unexpected path.

As the years passed, Bowers continued asking questions about faith and the purpose of life. His experiences took him through education, travel, service, meditation, and encounters with different religious communities. He studied at Brigham Young University and explored the teachings of Yogananda. His search later led him into the Unification Church, where he became involved in its activities and leadership.

Despite these experiences, his spiritual questions remained. His later exploration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints brought another significant chapter to his search. Through fasting, prayer, study, and personal spiritual experiences, Bowers eventually decided to be baptized.

Ask in Prayer also considers how memories and relationships can take on new significance years later. In one memorable episode, Bowers encountered an old friend more than four decades after they had studied together. Their conversation brought back a shared experience of fasting and praying for spiritual understanding. The unexpected reunion became another meaningful moment in Bowers’ reflection on prayer and the passage of time.

The memoir does not portray spiritual growth as a straight path. Instead, it follows a man willing to question, explore, reconsider, and continue searching. His experiences include moments of disappointment as well as experiences he interpreted as answers to prayer.

Through Ask in Prayer, Bowers encourages readers to consider their own questions about faith and the ways unexpected events can influence a person’s direction. His story offers a personal reflection on perseverance, spiritual seeking, service, and the belief that answers may come in ways that are not expected.
