Founded by Travis Oliphant, the two entities have operated as sister organizations since OpenTeams’ inception.
OpenTeams, a leader in open source AI platforms, systems, and solutions, today announced the acquisition of Quansight’s existing Consulting Division, including its core engineering team. This strategic move strengthens OpenTeams’ mission to deliver customizable, open source-based AI systems to enterprises and government agencies while enabling Quansight to deepen its commitment to sustaining the open source ecosystem through its new structure as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).
Both companies were founded by open source pioneer Travis Oliphant, creator of NumPy, SciPy and co-founder of Anaconda. Quansight and OpenTeams have operated in close collaboration since OpenTeams’ inception in 2019, sharing a vision for ethical, community-driven innovation and the wide-scale adoption of open source technologies.
This acquisition marks a critical evolution in that relationship and enables OpenTeams to meet the surging demand for AI integration, data management, model optimization, and open source AI system development across industry and government sectors. Meanwhile, Quansight PBC will focus on its public-benefit aligned mission to sustain and scale open source communities and infrastructure.
“This new structure allows each organization to play to its strengths,” said Joe Merrill, CEO of OpenTeams. “OpenTeams will now be able to scale its AI product strategy with a world-class engineering foundation while ensuring long-term support for the open source ecosystem through our continued collaboration with Quansight PBC.”
The transition also includes key leadership alignment. Dharhas Pothina, formerly the CTO of Quansight, will join OpenTeams as its new CTO, bringing continuity and deep engineering expertise to guide the company’s product strategy and technical growth.
“This evolution marks a powerful new chapter in how we deliver impact through open source,” said Dharhas Pothina, CTO at OpenTeams. “By bringing Quansight’s AI consulting talent into OpenTeams, we’re fusing deep engineering expertise with a product-driven mindset. Our goal is to make advanced, open source AI accessible and customizable for any organization—without compromising on transparency, trust, or control.”
The transition enables both organizations to amplify their impact:
- OpenTeams is expanding rapidly to meet a growing pipeline of open source AI opportunities across public and private sectors. Its acquisition of Quansight Consulting positions it to deliver secure, customizable AI solutions built on open source foundations.
- Quansight becomes a new public benefit company and operates with a renewed focus on long-term sustainability of community-driven open source projects through a mix of open source-aligned consulting services and grants.
“This is more than a business transaction—it’s a strategic alignment of purpose,” said Travis Oliphant, founder of both Quansight and OpenTeams. “By bringing Quansight’s AI Consulting Division into OpenTeams, we’re embedding a world-class engineering culture into a product-focused company that’s ready to scale. The engineers who helped create and shape the open source foundations of AI are now at the heart of building its future. Meanwhile, Quansight PBC can focus fully on its roots, sustaining and growing community-driven open source ecosystems around science and data.”
