The Artistic Standard Tackles Injustice of Social Justice In New Short Film Titled Dark Matter

Directed by Geno Brooks, founder of The Artistic Standard, Dark Matter highlights the humanity of black people who fall victim to police brutality at alarming rates

The Artistic Standard is proud to announce the release of a powerful new short film tackling the issue of injustice of social justice in America. Titled Dark Matter, the new movie zooms in on the tragic deaths of black victims—both highly publicized and not covered in the mainstream media—to highlight the humanity of black people whose lives were taken due to racism.

Dark Matter tells the story of the several martyrs of the Black Lives Matter movement who meet at a crossroads of conversations - all in one room for the first time on screen. Names like Trayvon, Tamir, Sandra, and Philando find themselves picking up the pieces of their untimely death while tempers flare as emotions about racism and police brutality fuel the conversation. The plot comes to a close with a big reveal of the narrator's identity and a special performance from an African drummer who calls on the ancestors to welcome the new members to their growing conclave.

“In a life of struggle and uncertainty, there’s often a foreseeable darkness. Then what happens next has everything to do with how equipped an individual is to hold on for dear life. Find peace. More importantly, have the safety and peace in the belief in the ones who are sworn to protect us from imminent danger.” Geno Brooks, the writer of the film is quoted in the opening.

The project has been years in the making since Brooks began researching the stories for Dark Matter after the Philando Castile and Alton Sterling murders that took place back-to-back in 2016. Brooks pondered on what a conversation with these now historic figures would look and feel like if they were in the same room. He artistically approached telling the stories from a point-of-view perspective that he’d never seen prior.

“We all know what happened to them, but few of us knew their dreams or the loved ones they were taken away from.” Brooks said, adding that he hopes everyone who watches the film will do their part in keeping the victims’ names alive.

Currently streaming on ALLBLK, Dark Matter was also directed by Geno Brooks, founder of The Artistic Standard, and is one of 8 films The Artistic Standard team has brought to the streaming platform through its Bear the Torch mentoring program. In the effort to change the black narrative, Brooks created The Bear the Torch program, which took 7 emerging BIPOC filmmakers through a year-long mentoring program teaching them how to write, produce and direct their short films.

To truly support this next generation of filmmakers with a career boost, The Artistic Standard has established a great distribution relationship with ALLBLK to partner with in support of the mentees with distributing their thesis short films. The Artistic Standard funded and handled production for each of the films. Each filmmaker will continue to be closely supported by their individual executive mentor and other rising, talented filmmakers supporting their vision.
