Reclaimed timber offers a number of practical advantages when it comes to flooring. Recycled wood typically costs less than virgin hardwood, is more environmentally friendly, and has a unique aesthetic that fits well with rustic and heritage-inspired designs.
Importantly, the process of reclaiming timber uses significantly less energy than harvesting and processing new wood — 11 to 13 times less, according to one study. Timber Queensland reports that over 50 percent of construction and demolition-derived wood waste can be reused, and 36 percent can be recycled.
"Recycled timber has become a preferred choice for clients who value sustainability and character in their flooring,” said a spokesperson for Better Timber Flooring. “Each piece carries a story, and with the Earthwood range, we're making those stories part of new spaces—without taking more from our forests."
The newly expanded Earthwood selection includes reclaimed and re-milled timber sourced from the Gladstone Pipeline route in North Queensland, where 500 km of mature, native trees were felled and chipped to make way for piping. Rather than letting this precious resource go to waste, a Better Timber Flooring rep explains, it’s been repurposed as the Earthwood Gladstone Pipeline (Reds) Engineered Flooring.
Also of note is the Victorian Origins line, which features Blackbutt, Oak, Messmate, Alpine Ash, Mountain Ash, Stringybark, Silvertop Ash, and Southern Beech timber hand-sourced from homes and decommissioned warehouses across Victoria. The timbers are reconditioned and re-milled to create stable, visually striking flooring suitable for both residential and commercial use.
Better Timber’s approach to hardwood flooring reflects both innovation and care. The company combines modern production methods with a long-term vision of reducing environmental impact. With more than 50 years of industry experience, its focus remains on delivering reliable flooring solutions that align with current sustainability goals.
Primarily serving Canberra, Sydney, and Melbourne, Better Timber Flooring delivers and installs hardwood flooring options across Australia and also accepts international orders.
