EdSource, a nonprofit journalism organization focused on education in California, announced that it has hired Michelle Quinn as its Executive Editor.
"I'm excited to join EdSource," Quinn said. "The team produces engaging, trustworthy journalism that helps parents, students, teachers and policymakers understand how education works. EdSource is a gift to all Californians."
A longtime Bay Area journalist, Quinn built her career covering how technology shapes work, life and learning. Quinn most recently worked as Silicon Valley bureau chief at Voice of America, the federally funded international broadcaster. She ran technology coverage, producing TV stories on online speech, generative AI in education, cryptocurrency and autonomous driving.
Prior to Voice of America, Quinn was a columnist at the San Jose Mercury News, where she wrote about how the technology industry was changing society, including parenting. Quinn was part of the team at the Bay Area News Group that won a 2017 Pulitzer Prize for the coverage of the Ghost Ship tragedy.
Quinn has also worked at Politico, the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. She was in the first issue of Wired magazine with “Beyond the Valley of the Morphs,” an article about the transformation in Hollywood’s digital effects.
"Covering education is like covering technology," Quinn said. "It means explaining complicated issues clearly and connecting these issues with people’s lives. EdSource does this well every day."
“I’m thrilled to have Michelle on board,” EdSource CEO Deborah Clark said. “She will be a great partner in raising the quality of our journalism and brings an audience-centric perspective to her work that will benefit our team and our audiences, as we evolve to be an indispensable source of coverage about education to more Californians.”
