When you have children, it can be hard seeing them process different emotions and feelings. For while they might be feeling something inside, they often struggle to articulate it in a rational way and this is when they act out or do things that aren’t in their normal character. This can be frustrating not only for them, but you too. For their misbehaving might be out of frustration or upset, but it doesn’t make it any easier on you as a parent. This is why it’s so hard to help your children learn about their emotions and how to regulate them and recognise what certain feelings mean. Here we have a look at some top tips to help your children with their emotions.

Teach them to acknowledge their feelings and talk about them

When children act out because they’re feeling a certain way, they might not feel like they can open up. It’s important to speak to them and let them know they can talk about their thoughts and feelings no matter how trivial they might seem or if they worry they’ll get told off. Let them know you are their safe space and you can talk through anything with them. Once they’ve had an outburst, sit and speak to them about why they might have acted that way and how they can avoid it in the future.

Speak about things in an age-sensitive manner and don’t sugarcoat everything

Children of different ages have different ways of being able to deal with sensitive subjects in life, so always approach them with caution. If there has been a death in the family, for example, this could hit them hard, but they might not know how to process it. You could speak with them in a way that resonates and have them do something such as pick out stone masons for the resting place with you, or have them keep a diary to write down their thoughts and feelings.

Look for books and tools to help

Luckily there are a host of books and tools that can help you when it comes to teaching your children the best ways to deal with their emotions. You could look online, in local libraries or bookstores and also search on forums. There are many coping mechanisms for you to speak to your children about to help them learn how to regulate their feelings and not get too overwhelmed going forward. After all, big emotions can feel scary for a child too as they are feeling so much but just don’t know what to do about it.

These are just a few top tips to help your children with their emotions. You’ll find once they know a bit more about why they are feeling the way they are, it gets easier for you to manage them and they are also much happier.
