COVENT GARDEN, U.K. - Jan. 24, 2023 - PRLog -- A rare and magnificent 19th-century French satinwood and mahogany sewing table with parquetry by the renowned Charles-Guillaume Diehl has been discovered. The piece is believed to have been created around 1851 and is a prime example of Diehl's subtle beauty and fine craftsmanship.
Charles-Guillaume Diehl was born in Germany in 1811 and moved to Paris in 1840, where he crafted his famous pieces of art until his death in 1885. He participated in all major international exhibitions during the middle of the nineteenth century, starting with the Great Exhibition in 1851, and was frequently awarded. In his prime popularity, he employed more than 600 workers to design and produce his highly sought-after pieces. The luxury furniture was often found in rare collections of noblemen and women across Europe.
The piece features a hinged lid that holds an integral mirror with a birdseye maple-lined fitted interior and a single drawer raised on faceted, slender tapering supports and classical lines. The piece is signed by Charles-Guillaume Diehl himself. The Parisian influence in this piece is apparent in the cultured lines and carefully selected superior woods—maple satinwood and mahogany.
The sewing table is in good condition and well cared for, with only some fading commensurate with ageing. Some minor restoration is perceived to the top of this piece as visualised in the images. The piece measures 62 cm wide x 75 cm high.
Provenance: From a private collection.
