The Parts Gap Nobody Talks About: Why Owners of Honda's Brio, Mobilio, HR-V and BR-V Struggle to Find Genuine Parts Abroad

-- Bravo Motor, a family-run automotive parts specialist founded in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1996 and now led by second-generation owner Kenny Purnomo, is closing a little-discussed gap in the global auto parts market: the difficulty of sourcing genuine and OEM parts for Indonesian-built Hondas — including the Brio, Mobilio, BR-V, HR-V and older Civics — once these cars reach owners overseas. Because global parts databases are largely built around North American and European specifications, and as Honda's dealer network in Indonesia contracts, buyers abroad often struggle to find a trustworthy supplier who can identify the right part accurately. Bravo Motor answers this by working from vehicle frame numbers (VIN) rather than model names alone, communicating directly in English and Mandarin, responding quickly across time zones, and shipping to buyers across four continents — from the United States and the Caribbean to Cyprus, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malaysia and Japan — with most orders ready to ship within one day of payment.

Honda builds some of its most popular compact cars in Indonesia. The Brio, Mobilio, BR-V, WR-V and HR-V roll off Indonesian production lines and are exported to dozens of countries. But once these cars reach owners overseas, a quiet problem follows them: finding the right spare part becomes surprisingly difficult.

The reason is structural. Most global parts databases and distribution networks are built around North American and European model specifications. Indonesian-market Hondas — with their own trim variations, engine options, facelifts and production codes — often fall outside those catalogs. An owner in Nicosia or Dar es Salaam searching for a Mobilio component can find plenty of listings for cars that were never sold there, and almost nothing for the one they actually drive.

Local support does not always fill the gap. In some export markets, dealerships are small and do not stock slow-moving parts. And even in Indonesia, Honda's retail footprint has been contracting — over the past year, several Jakarta-area dealerships have closed or converted to fast-expanding Chinese brands such as BYD and Chery. For owners of Indonesian-built Hondas, at home or abroad, relying on official retail channels for every part is no longer a safe assumption.

This is the gap that Bravo Motor, a family-run parts specialist in Surabaya, has spent the last few years learning to close.

When the hard part is identifying the part

"The biggest challenge today isn't stock — it's identification. Anyone can buy a spare part online now, but knowing the exact part the car actually needs is another thing entirely. One model can have several different versions of the same component. Sometimes a small difference in production year already means a different part," said Kenny Purnomo, second-generation owner of Bravo Motor.

Customers rarely arrive with complete information. Many come with a blurry photo, a workshop nickname for the part, or a car model but no frame number. That is manageable for a walk-in customer in Surabaya. Across an ocean, with shipping costs and lead times attached, a single misidentified part turns into a costly, slow return.

To prevent that, Bravo Motor works from vehicle frame numbers (VIN) and old-part documentation rather than the model name alone — the level of precision that separates "a part that looks right" from "the part that fits."

Why overseas buyers transfer money to Surabaya

Buying auto parts across borders is, for most people, an act of trust. The buyer is wiring money to a shop they have never visited, in a country they may never have been to, for a part they cannot inspect first. Bravo Motor's answer to that has been less about technology and more about how it operates.

"Among the parts shops around here, very few can serve a foreign buyer in English — I handle it directly, and in Mandarin as well when needed. I respond fast, even at night. And a lot of new overseas buyers come to us because another company they trust referred them," said Purnomo.

That combination — direct communication in the buyer's language, fast response across time zones, and referrals from satisfied clients — has turned first-time cross-border orders into repeat business. Bravo Motor now counts repeat buyers in the United States and Cyprus among its overseas customers.

Payment is handled through channels that give overseas buyers confidence and flexibility. Buyers can pay via PayPal, which carries built-in buyer protection, through international bank transfer (SWIFT) for larger orders, or in cryptocurrency for those who prefer faster, borderless settlement. All orders are invoiced in US dollars, and payment details are confirmed before any part is shipped.

Four continents, and counting

Bravo Motor currently ships to buyers in the United States, the Caribbean, Cyprus, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malaysia and Japan, among other markets. The most frequently requested parts abroad are for the Honda HR-V and BR-V, followed by components for older 1990s-era Civics — models with a loyal global following and thinning local parts support.

Turnaround is deliberately kept short. For most orders, parts are ready to ship within one day of payment; larger or heavier items take one to two days depending on the courier. Buyers can choose their preferred shipping method, with post office services used most often for international delivery, and can browse and request parts directly from Bravo Motor's shop.

From a parts shop to precision sourcing

Founded in 1996 by Hengky Purnomo, Bravo Motor began as a conventional Honda parts shop in Surabaya. Under the second generation, it has repositioned around what Kenny Purnomo calls precision and reliable parts sourcing — an approach built on accurate identification, superb service, and short lead times rather than shelf space alone.

"Going forward, the future of this business isn't just having stock. It's the ability to translate what a vehicle actually needs into an accurate part — with the accuracy, service and lead time the customer expects, wherever they are in the world," said Purnomo.

As official retail networks consolidate and more owners buy parts themselves online, Bravo Motor is betting that the most valuable thing a parts supplier can offer is not the widest inventory, but the ability to get the identification right the first time — and to be reachable, in the buyer's language, when it matters.
