Families of Wanda Satterthwaite Question Jurisdiction in Jay Z Filing in New Jersey

Family members urge the public to stay vigilant as concerns about jurisdiction and standing remain unresolved

-- The family of Wanda Satterthwaite(now deceased) has issued a public statement regarding ongoing court matters involving Wanda’s son, Rymir Satterthwaite. According to the family, recent filings by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter in the State of New Jersey raise questions about legal authority, jurisdiction, and standing.

As of August 2025, Carter filed actions against Lillie Coley, the former legal guardian of Rymir. Wanda’s family states that Carter’s paternity as it relates to Rymir has not been established and that the State of New Jersey has previously indicated a lack of jurisdiction in related matters. Based on their review of court documents, the family believes the court does not have the authority to move forward.

The family also refers to prior proceedings in 2012, where they allege Carter misrepresented his property connections to New Jersey. They say this led to outcomes that disadvantaged Coley in representing Rymir, and that subsequent orders, including liens on property, were harmful and unfair. These claims, they emphasize, reflect their interpretation of the documents and proceedings.

“Only those with a recognized legal relationship or established rights may seek modification in such matters,” said a family spokesperson. “As paternity has not been determined, we believe Carter does not meet this requirement.”

For Wanda’s family, the issue is deeply personal. Family members explain that her concern remains for her son, now an adult, who has been pursuing clarity regarding paternity for years. They caution that if cases proceed without jurisdiction, it risks undermining public confidence in the legal process.

Wanda’s family is urging the community to keep watch on how the courts handle this matter, emphasizing that the outcomes affect not only their family but also broader principles of fairness and accountability. “When courts move forward without proper jurisdiction, it sets a precedent that can touch every family,” the spokesperson added.

The Families Liberties Union, based in Philadelphia, is supporting the family’s effort to bring attention to the issue. The organization emphasizes that the information presented represents the family’s perspective and that the courts are the ultimate authority to determine the matter.
