Back2theWater has announced a retreat in Cartagena, Colombia, scheduled for August 17-27, 2025, to help BIPOC women aged 55 and over increase their water confidence.

-- The newly announced 10-day wellness retreat offers a four-day curriculum of beginner-friendly swim lessons led by certified instructors in a nurturing, relaxing setting with access to a private pool. Participants will receive support in overcoming aquaphobia and healing from generational trauma stemming from the historical and systemic barriers Black women have faced in swimming education.
More information is available at https://back2thewater.org/
The curriculum includes relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, mindful movement, and other holistic strategies to help attendees remove mental barriers preventing them from feeling at ease in the water. The program also includes group safety briefings and water-based warm-up sessions, culminating in a guided open-water swim.
“Breaking through aquaphobia isn’t just about acquiring a skill - it’s about reclaiming power, autonomy, and joy,” a spokesperson for the retreat explained. “It’s about saying ‘yes’ to fully enjoying life, whether that means a dip in the local pool, diving into new travel adventures, or simply conquering a personal challenge you once thought was impossible.”
During the retreat, attendees will have opportunities to explore Cartagena's history, culture, and cuisine after the day’s lessons. They’ll also have the option to take home a personalized video blog of the retreat as a keepsake.
The retreat organizers are currently looking for sponsors and speakers to support and help raise awareness about the event. These include experts in areas such as health and wellness for Black women, generational trauma, and trauma-informed care, as well as organizations whose missions align with the goals of the retreat.
