Bariatric surgery is a procedure during which the lower intestine opening is detached from the lower part of the stomach and then re-attached to the top part of the stomach. This helps to shrink the stomach and reduce the amount of food eaten. It also reduces the time the food spends in the small intestine, thereby limiting nutrient absorption.
Patients who qualify for this type of surgery must have a BMI greater than 40 or between 35 and 40, if they have any other conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Patients with a BMI of 30 - 35 can also be eligible, but each case is evaluated separately for its merit.
It is essential that the patient prepares properly. They will most likely have their surgery about 6 -12 weeks from the time that they went to see the doctor. The weight loss experienced after the surgery differs from person to person and is also influenced by the patient's starting weight. Generally, people achieve a weight loss of between 70 - 80% above their ideal weight, which is set at a BMI of 25.
Patients often ask what the best type of surgery would be, which can be difficult to answer as each person’s case is unique. Most people can have a gastric bypass but if this is not possible, they would then have the sleeve gastrectomy option.
