Pillir Publishes the ADS Benchmarks Statistics Its Market Research Found

This morning, Pillir released a blog post on its website discussing current market research addressing application development approach benchmarks. The article began by stating that changes to a company’s IT infrastructure are always accompanied by a certain amount of discomfort. In an age of digital transformation, expanding technology, and new value-packed software solutions, it is not surprising that organizations are suffering growing pains.

According to the SAPinsider Application Strategy and Development for SAP S/4HANA and Cloud Benchmark Report, challenges may be boiled down to two competing forces. SAP customers are looking for methods to monetise current investments in custom code while moving ahead with plans to update their IT systems – all while avoiding risk.

Early in 2022, SAPInsider’s benchmark survey of 141 IT experts from across the globe delved deeply into SAP customers’ application development strategies, objectives, and difficulties, and utilized the findings to provide advice on how to create a successful application development plan. The first finding depicts the current state of affairs: the majority of businesses have an enterprise-wide application development strategy, yet around half are unhappy with its effectiveness.

Legacy ABAP code is the core source of discontent for many individuals. Numerous organizations have bespoke code that is years (or even decades) old, which hinders the maintenance of a clean SAP core. In addition, it is usual for the developers who built the code to have moved on to new responsibilities, and bespoke business applications are often not adequately documented. Therefore, upgrading bespoke programs is a time-consuming and resource-intensive process—assuming the required skill sets are even available. As the IT skills scarcity persists, candidates with ABAP and cloud competence are uncommon.

On the edge of a move to a new IT environment, such as from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA, enterprises must make crucial choices. About half of SAP customers are spending time and money in rewriting ABAP code, some are retiring it and migrating to standard functionality, and some are not shifting ABAP to the cloud, thus requiring a hybrid environment. In addition, 28 percent are currently weighing their alternatives. Similar to the dilemma companies face when relocating to new headquarters, the decision is whether to hire movers to handle all the clutter they’ll take with them, or to clean up beforehand.
