Surrey UK Aviation Fuel Test Kit Expert: Microbial Contamination Report Released

Fuel test kit manufacturer, Conidia Bioscience, released a report on fuel testing in the aviation industry. The report offers strategies for combating microbial contamination in jet fuels.

Conidia Bioscience, a fuel test kit manufacturer in Egham, UK, released a report on the importance of fuel testing in the aviation industry. The company produces FUELSTAT®, a simple on-site single-use immunoassay antibody test used to detect microbial contamination in diesel and jet fuels.

The report aims to spread awareness regarding the risks of microbial contamination and suggests strategies to prevent, treat, and control microbial growth.

Microbial contamination, or Diesel Bug, is the result of microbes entering the fuel from the surrounding environment. The microbes occupy the boundary between fuel and water, known as the water bottom, where they feed off hydrocarbons. Here they produce bacterial matting known as biomass, biofilms, or slime, along with acids capable of causing serious mechanical and structural issues to the aircraft.

According to the report, recent changes to fuels designed to help the environment mean that it’s now easier for dangerous microbes to grow in tanks and engines. Left unchecked, these microbes can cause blockages to filters and injectors, problems with metering and gauging, as well as corrosion to mechanical and structural parts. The fuel itself may also require expensive polishing and biocide application to be salvaged and reused.

The report suggests that proactive management and frequent fuel testing are the most cost-effective ways to prevent microbial contamination. Investing a small amount in a proactive strategy and fuel maintenance plan can mean significant long-term savings.

Though many test options are available, the report recommends Conidia Bioscience’s FUELSTAT® kit to test for microbial contamination. The FUELSTAT® kit is self-contained, easy to use, and only detects microbes that do damage to the fuel. The inexpensive test takes as little as 15 minutes, and results can be tracked instantly on the FUELSTAT® Result App for smartphones.

“Microbial contamination of jet fuel is a serious issue for the aviation industry, including the private jet sector. As microbes multiply, potentially damaging biomass and corrosive acidic compounds can be generated,” said Andrew Rushton, Head of Aviation at Conidia Bioscience. “Once it takes hold, safety becomes a real concern and urgent repairs or biocide treatment can mean extended downtime and high costs. That’s why it’s important to take a proactive approach to microbial contamination of jet fuel.”
