A heartwarming story teaching children, parents, and educators that fairness means giving everyone what they need to learn
Author and professional education advocate Tracey Lyons Tozier delivers an empowering message for children and educators alike in her latest book, Fiona Finds What’s Fair. Through the eyes of a young girl navigating her new school, Tozier illustrates what true fairness looks like in education and why advocacy matters for every student.
In this uplifting tale, Fiona and her mother, Mama Bulldog, must stand up to Principal Hardly to ensure Fiona keeps her 504 plan. With the help of Superintendent Mr. Walkies and school psychologist Mrs. Deborah Tester, Fiona learns that “fair” isn’t about everyone getting the same thing — it’s about everyone getting what they need to learn.
Drawing from her own experiences as a mother of two children with autism and learning disabilities, Tozier weaves an authentic and compassionate story that resonates deeply with families, teachers, and advocates. Her book encourages readers to challenge outdated notions of fairness and embrace empathy, understanding, and the power of self-advocacy.
“The concept of fairness in education is still not widely understood,” says Tozier. “I wanted to help students, teachers, and administrators grow in knowledge, empathy, and compassion for students with special needs.”
Tozier brings decades of experience to her writing. She holds a Master’s in Clinical Social Services from Bryn Mawr College and a BA in Psychology and Social Work from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As a trained advocate through the Council of Parent and Attorney Advocates (COPAA), Tozier has dedicated her career to helping families navigate educational challenges.
Fiona Finds What’s Fair follows Tozier’s earlier children’s books, Benny Speaks Up and Mikey Can’t Help It, which also explore understanding and inclusion in education.
