Tong Xiangbei, Global CEO of smart, outlined the brand’s approach: "As one of the first global automotive brands to transition to an electric-first portfolio, smart has always taken pragmatic innovation as its fundamental principle, deeply integrating ESG considerations into the core of its strategy, and continuously exploring a development path that balances resilience and sustainable value."
Collaborative Decarbonization of the Value Chain
smart is committed to working with industry partners to accelerate low-carbon transformation across its value chain. Central to this is its localization strategy. For 2024, smart’s local procurement rate exceeded 95% in both China and Europe regions. This localized model cuts transportation distances, reducing emissions from logistics while also lowering costs and shortening delivery times. smart actively prioritizes local suppliers and encourages core partners to establish production near its manufacturing bases, building a more efficient, reliable and responsible supplier network. In 2024, smart established systematic life-cycle carbon footprint management for all its vehicles and raised material standards, increasing targets for recycled aluminum content from 25% to 30% and recycled plastics from 22% to 25% across numerous components. Furthermore, through deliberate choices in material sourcing and design, over 95% of materials in all smart mass-production models are recoverable, ensuring that today's vehicles become tomorrow's resources.

The recoverability rate of smart's all sold mass-produced models reached over 95%
To broaden its sustainability efforts, smart encourages suppliers to make sustainability a priority within their own business. One charging partner avoided over 800,000 tons of CO2 through clean energy solutions, while a materials supplier helps powers its operations with 18.86 million kWh of annual solar energy - enough to power approximately 5,000 households for a year - from its own photovoltaic installations.
Mindful technology for Safer, Smarter Cars
smart puts customers at the heart of its innovation, developing technology that makes driving safer, less stressful, and more sustainable. With the smart NSP Pro, the brand was the first international automaker to launch urban pilot assisted driving in China. This advanced navigation system handles highly complex scenarios by emulating the habits of a mature driver, achieving over a 95% success rate at intersections. smart's intelligent driving technology was recognized with multiple awards at the 2024 National Intelligent Driving Test Competition Finals, where the brand won the Annual Outstanding Power Output Award, Annual Urban NOA Excellence Award, and Annual AEB Braking Excellence Award.

Driving Positive Social Impact
Guided by its “open your mind” brand spirit, smart has developed meaningful programs that engage communities around sustainable practices. Its initiatives are focused on three key areas: Traffic Mobility, Social Mobility, and Urban Mobility.
Under its Traffic Mobility pillar in 2024, smart involved car owners in its Companion Forest program, planting 4,850 Haloxylon trees in Gansu to help create a more stable forest belt against desertification. Separately, the "Trek 100" charity ride in Shanghai gathered 2,000 participants to promote education through green mobility.

In Urban Mobility, smart’s collaboration with Nottingham University challenged 41 teams of young designers to envision low-carbon retail spaces, bridging academic innovation with practical application. In Germany, smart collaborated with non-profit organisation Viva con Agua on a clean water and sanitation initiative, launched at the GLÜCKSGEFÜHLE Festival 2024. The brand also teamed-up with Mercedes-Benz as mobility partners for the "Karneval der Kulturen" in Berlin, advocating for low-carbon mobility and urban cultural integration.
Under Social Mobility, smart’s “Green and Low-carbon Workshop" volunteering initiative introduced 50 students in Shaanxi to environmental concepts through hands-on learning. The brand also continued to support the Jane's Walk event team, sponsoring three city walk activities in Suzhou, Hong Kong, and Singapore, with the focus on exploring the best solutions for future urban mobility.
Sustainability remains fundamental to smart's identity and strategic direction. The company continues to collaborate with global partners on its path to its 2045 goal, ensuring that each innovation serves people and every kilometer driven contributes to a more sustainable world.
