Molina Healthcare of Michigan and The MolinaCares Accord Pledge $150,000 to Wayne Metro Community Action Agency to Improve Housing Security

Molina Healthcare of Michigan (“Molina”), in collaboration with The MolinaCares Accord (“MolinaCares"), announced a grant of $150,000 to the Wayne Metro Community Action Agency (“Wayne Metro”) in support of its efforts to provide stable housing for low-income families and improve the overall wellness of those they serve. The funding will help pay for essential items and services needed to maintain a livable housing environment for Detroiters facing financial struggles.

Research shows the median household income in Detroit is nearly a third lower than the rest of the state and 60% of Detroit renters are considered cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing and related costs. In 2023, over 20,000 individuals in the city faced evictions. Studies found people facing housing instability often forego routine and acute medical care and are more likely to have multiple chronic conditions.

This grant builds upon a $100,000 contribution to Wayne Metro in 2024, which helped over 140 households with utility expenses, rental support, and other basic needs like access to nutritious foods. Individuals who received that support saw reduced health care expenses, including decreases in inpatient hospital and emergency department visits.

“This is the kind of impact we strive for at Molina—healthier communities, more stable lives, and more efficient use of health care resources,” said Terrisca Des Jardins, plan president of Molina Healthcare of Michigan. “Through this grant, Molina and The MolinaCares Accord are investing in people, families, and the long-term health of our Detroit and Wayne County communities.”

In 2023, Molina and the Molina Healthcare Charitable Foundation provided a $40,000 Save the Day Housing Fund grant to provide emergency aid to residents experiencing housing instability.

"We're so grateful to Molina for this continued and expanded partnership,” said Dr. Nadeem Siddiqi, CEO of Wayne Metro. "In our pursuit to eliminate poverty, this program plays a critical role in supporting our clients' needs of food, utilities, and housing. This win-win program results in direct support to clients, while reducing overall costs across the support system."
