Jeremy Toms Highlights the Importance of Youth Sports in Central Texas

Temple, Texas builder Jeremy Toms encourages communities to support youth athletics and expand opportunities for young athletes across Central Texas.

TEMPLE, TX / ACCESS Newswire / March 9, 2026 / Jeremy Toms, owner of Legacy Custom Builders in Temple, Texas, is speaking out about the importance of youth sports programs and the positive impact they have on young people and communities across Central Texas.

Toms, who donated $30,000 to youth sports initiatives across the region in 2025, says the goal is not simply to fund athletic programs, but to encourage communities to invest in opportunities that help young people develop confidence, discipline, and teamwork.

"Youth sports create structure and purpose for kids," Toms said. "They learn how to work hard, support their teammates, and handle both success and setbacks. Those lessons carry into the rest of their lives."

Across the United States, youth sports participation remains a powerful driver of personal development. According to research from the Aspen Institute's Project Play, children who participate in organized sports are more likely to demonstrate higher academic achievement, improved mental health, and stronger leadership skills later in life.

However, participation has declined in recent years. Data from Project Play and the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) shows that only about 44% of children ages 6 to 12 regularly participate in team sports, a drop from earlier generations. Rising costs, lack of facilities, and limited access to programs in some communities are among the main reasons families report for the decline.

Toms believes local support can help close those gaps.

"Not every family has the resources to put their kids into organized sports," he said. "But communities can step up. Local businesses, volunteers, and parents can all play a role in making sure kids still get those opportunities."

For Toms, the issue is personal. Growing up around athletics and outdoor activities helped shape his perspective on discipline and teamwork. Today, he sees youth sports as one of the most effective ways communities can invest in the next generation.

"Sports teach habits that translate directly into adulthood," he said. "Showing up on time. Working with a team. Pushing through challenges. Those are skills that help people succeed in any field."

Studies also suggest youth sports can have long-term health benefits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that children who stay physically active are more likely to maintain healthy habits into adulthood, reducing risks associated with obesity, heart disease, and other chronic conditions.

Beyond health and leadership benefits, Toms says youth sports can strengthen communities themselves.

"When kids are playing sports, families are coming together," he said. "Parents meet each other on the sidelines. Volunteers step up to coach. It builds a stronger sense of community."

While financial contributions help support leagues and facilities, Toms emphasizes that community members can contribute in many ways beyond donations.

"People often think helping means writing a big check," he said. "But it can also mean volunteering to coach, helping maintain fields, or simply showing up to support local teams."

Toms encourages individuals and businesses across Central Texas to look for ways to get involved with youth sports programs in their own communities.

"Every town has leagues that rely on volunteers and community support," he said. "Even small efforts can make a difference for kids who just want the chance to play."

As Central Texas continues to grow, Toms hopes youth sports will remain a priority for local communities.

"If we want strong communities in the future, we have to invest in young people today," he said. "Sports are one of the simplest ways to do that."

Call to Action

Community members who want to support youth sports can start locally by volunteering with youth leagues, attending local games, helping maintain community fields, or supporting programs that provide access to athletics for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate.
