China’s Wind and Solar Capacity Surpasses Coal for the First Time

According to data from China's National Energy Administration, the country's total installed renewable energy capacity reached 2.34 billion kW by the end of 2025, accounting for around 60% of the national power capacity, up from about 40% in 2020.

Combined wind and solar capacity grew from 530 million kW in 2020 to 1.84 billion kW in 2025, surpassing coal-fired power capacity for the first time.

Meanwhile, new energy storage capacity exceeded 100 million kW, representing more than 40% of the global total. Trading volume of green electricity certificates in 2025 also exceeded the combined total of previous years.

Large wind and solar projects in desert and arid regions added over 130 million kW of new capacity, supported by ultra-high-voltage transmission lines that deliver renewable power to major demand centers. Currently, nearly 40% of China's electricity consumption comes from renewable sources.

On the consumption side, China has built the world's largest electric vehicle charging network and launched pilot programs for vehicle-to-grid interaction in several regions.

In addition, improvements in green electricity and certificate trading mechanisms and reforms to market-based pricing for renewable power are underway. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China's exports of wind and solar products helped reduce carbon emissions in other countries by about 4.1 billion tons.
