Mogy Law Tennessee announced today its continued commitment to representing car accident victims in Memphis and Shelby County, following the release of data showing a historic 90-death reduction in traffic fatalities during 2025, marking the largest decrease of any Tennessee Highway Patrol district statewide.
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security released statistics on December 31, 2025, revealing that Memphis and Shelby County recorded 169 traffic fatalities in 2025, down from 259 deaths in 2024. This 35 percent decline represents the most significant improvement among all THP districts in Tennessee, with Memphis District 4 accounting for more than 60 percent of the state's total 149-death reduction.

While the dramatic decrease in fatal accidents represents a major public safety achievement credited to the Memphis Safe Task Force and THP Bluff City Task Force, Shelby County continues to experience more than 30,000 car accidents annually, with approximately 8,400 resulting in injuries. The county maintains the highest number of licensed drivers in Tennessee at 575,000 and ranks second statewide for total car accidents, behind only Davidson County.
"The reduction in traffic fatalities demonstrates what coordinated enforcement efforts can achieve, but thousands of Memphis residents still suffer injuries in preventable accidents every year," said Eric Mogy, founding attorney at Mogy Law Tennessee. "While fewer families are experiencing the tragedy of losing loved ones, the reality remains that injury-causing crashes continue at concerning rates, particularly during evening hours between 3 and 9 PM when collision rates peak."
The statewide data showed Tennessee recorded 1,045 traffic deaths in 2025 compared to 1,194 in 2024, representing a 14 percent drop. Urban areas saw 128 fewer fatalities compared to 2024, with improvements noted in teen driver fatalities, older driver deaths, and pedestrian fatalities. Motorcycle fatalities did not demonstrate the same level of improvement.
Despite enhanced enforcement efforts, dangerous conditions persist at high-risk intersections including Compress Drive and South Lauderdale Street, and East Holmes Road and Lamar Avenue. Friday remains the most dangerous day for collisions, accounting for 16 percent of weekly crashes. Impaired driving continues as a significant factor, with one in seven serious crashes involving DUI and one in three fatal crashes involving impaired driving. Drivers aged 20 to 34 account for nearly 40 percent of DUI-related crashes.
