Chronic Oversleeping In Adults: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment Guide Released

Mission Connection has released a new guide on sleeping disorders in adults, particularly chronic oversleeping, also known as chronic hypersomnia.

-- Expanding on its educational series on sleep disorders, Mission Connection’s latest guide covers chronic oversleeping, also known as hypersomnia, which can be an indication of more serious underlying health conditions. The resource covers symptoms, possible causes, treatments, and coping strategies.

Hypersomnia is classified as a sleep-wake disorder by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Mission Connection’s guide says that the condition is characterized by excessive sleepiness that continues even after periods of rest exceeding 8 hours. The two main types of hypersomnia are primary hypersomnia, which occurs on its own and includes idiopathic hypersomnia (hypersomnolence with no known cause), narcolepsy, and Kleine-Levin Syndrome; and secondary hypersomnia, which can develop as a result of depression, trauma, sleep apnea, substance abuse, or other medical conditions.

Hypersomnia can significantly impair daily functioning and often results in symptoms such as constant daytime sleepiness, difficulties waking up, low moods or irritability, and physical discomfort that may arise due to muscle stiffness from spending too much time in bed; individuals with the condition may also find it difficult to maintain responsibilities, a healthy routine, and relationships. Over time, hypersomnia can even lead to shame, guilt, or emotional withdrawal, especially when the individual’s somnolence is perceived as laziness.

To manage hypersomnia symptoms, individuals can first evaluate their sleep quality through a sleep assessment, which can help rule out underlying medical conditions. If a mental illness is determined to be the cause, Mission Connection says that evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy can help address the condition and improve sleep quality.

The guide adds that maintaining good sleep hygiene and managing stress levels can also help retain the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. These strategies may include going to bed at consistent times, refraining from long naps, limiting screen time before bed, and practicing mindfulness exercises that can calm the nervous system.

Finally, Mission Connection says that lifestyle can also contribute to healthy sleep cycles and that individuals with hypersomnia should consider complementing any treatments they are undergoing with regular physical activity and a balanced diet.
