Industry Collaboration Aims to Set New Standard in Clinical Chain-of-Identity and Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Security
p-Chip Corporation, Choice One Rx, and RxERP, today announced a partnership to conduct a precedent-setting trial demonstrating end-to-end digital traceability. The trial will demonstrate advanced traceability of drugs for Oncology, Urology, Rheumatology and Gastroenterology across pharmaceutical supply chains for over 1,000 patients through to 2028. The trial is designed to validate compliance with the U.S. Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) to establish verifiable Chain-of-Identity and Chain-of-Custody for individual prescriptions. The trial is co-sponsored by Avantor, a leading global provider of mission-critical laboratory and clinical consumables for the life sciences and healthcare sectors.
The trial leverages p-Chip’s unique Light Activated Microtransponders (MTPs) that are permanently embedded into individual prescription vials and containers to enable unit-level serialization. Each MTP emits a highly secure encrypted digital ID that is unique, unclonable and unalterable that enables traceability across pharmacy operations through Choice One Rx, and supply chain orchestration through RxERP, with Avantor supporting the initiative as a co-sponsor to advance security in pharmaceutical supply chain integrity.
Traditional adhesive labeling approaches such as barcodes and RFIDs are vulnerable to damage, theft, and copying for misappropriation to non-compliant or counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Additionally, traditional labeling methods do not survive the extreme low temperatures for cryogenic storage and shipping for thermolabile medications in cold chain supply logistics.
Unlike traditional DSCSA implementations that rely primarily on serialized barcodes and disconnected data linkages, this trial will demonstrate and evaluate how permanently embedded, tamper-resistant digital MTPs can maintain a continuous and auditable connection between a drug’s physical form and its digital record—enabling a true Chain-of-Identity and Chain-of-Custody from origin to administration for individual patients under DSCSA compliance.
“DSCSA compliance depends on confidence in the identity of the product at every point in the supply chain,” said Michael Hadjisavas, COO Life Sciences & Healthcare at p-Chip Corporation. “This trial demonstrates how permanent and immutable, unit-level digital identity in pharmaceutical product packaging can support regulatory requirements while laying the groundwork for a more trusted and resilient pharmaceutical ecosystem.”
Validating DSCSA-Aligned Traceability in Real-World Environments
The trial is designed to demonstrate and evaluate MTPs for DSCSA-aligned use cases, including:
- Unit-level identification and authentication using p-Chips embedded MTPs
- Secure linkage between physical drug units to their digital transaction and verification records
- Interoperable data exchange across pharmacy operations and ERP systems
- Verification at dispense within a licensed pharmacy environment
- Audit-ready traceability to support DSCSA compliance requirements
Choice One Rx will serve as the live pharmacy environment, validating operational feasibility, while RxERP will provide the necessary System-of-Record infrastructure required for compliance, verification, and reporting.
“Pharmacies are where DSCSA compliance is critical for operational excellence and compliance,” said Mr. MJ Bixby, CEO at Choice One Rx. “This trial shows how Chain-of-Identity can be preserved through dispensing workflows without disrupting patient care.”
“Interoperability and identity continuity are essential to scalable DSCSA compliance,” said Steve Madsen, CEO at RxERP. “By integrating unit-level digital identity into enterprise pharmacy systems, this trial demonstrates a practical and extensible approach to verification and compliance.”
“As a co-sponsor, Avantor supports initiatives that advance supply chain transparency, product integrity, and patient safety,” said Michael Kazinski, Vice President Precision Plastics at Avantor. “This trial reflects the kind of cross-industry collaboration needed to modernize pharmaceutical traceability.”
Establishing a Foundation for Future Supply Chain Integrity for Pharmaceuticals
In addition to DSCSA compliance, the collaborators view the trial as a foundational effort to support broader supply chain capabilities, including enhanced counterfeit detection, diversion prevention, automated recalls, and improved product confidence.
By successfully demonstrating digital traceability and Chain-of-Identity enablement, this trial seeks to provide an actionable framework for DSCSA compliance and inspire industry-wide adoption of interoperable, secure supply chain technologies. The outcome is expected to help mitigate risks associated with counterfeit drugs and support regulatory efforts to protect patient health and safety.
About p-Chip Corporation
