OVIEDO, FL – Sept. 17, 2026 – Preparedness is a discipline, not a document, according to business continuity expert Keith Erwood. A binder, a folder or a file in the cloud may support preparedness, but it does not create it. Real readiness shows up as leadership alignment, role clarity, practiced decision-making, updated assumptions, known priorities, tested recovery thinking and calm execution under pressure — the capability a business builds, not the plan it files away. That is the message Erwood delivered in Episode 5 of his daily broadcast, “The Morning Endurance Call.”
This is why some organizations have plans but still struggle in a real event, Erwood said. They documented something, but they did not build the discipline around it.
“A document may support preparedness, but it does not create it,” Erwood said in the episode.
The difference, he said, is capability. “Discipline is what turns ideas into capability,” Erwood said, adding that the principle holds true in business, in leadership and in life. A plan describes intent; discipline is what makes that intent usable when a disruption actually arrives.
Erwood closed the episode with a question he urged leaders to carry into the day: “Are we maintaining documents, or are we building capability?” That distinction, he said, changes everything.
