Tina - The Tina Turner Musical is one of the West End's most popular musicals and received its world premiere in London on 21st March 2018. The production dramatises the life and musical career of American Rock N' Roll icon, Tina Turner, highlighting both the highs and lows of her life.
Tina - The Tina Turner Musical is directed by Phillida Lloyd and written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Katori Hall with Kees Prins and Frank Ketelaar. Choreography for the show is by Anthony van Laast, with musical supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck, set and costume designs by Mark Thompson, sound by Nevin Steinberg, fight direction by Kate Waters, projection design by Jeff Sugg, orchestrations by Ethan Popp, lighting by Bruno Poet, and wigs, hair and makeup design by Campbell Young Associates.
Tina was born Anna Mae Ruddock in 1939, on a farm in a small Southern town called Nutbush, Tennessee, and attended high school in Brownsville, where she joined the local basketball and cheerleading teams. There, she met Harry Taylor, her first boyfriend, but the relationship ended when she found out he was married! After graduating and leaving high school, she became a nurse's assistant.
Anna enjoyed spending time in St. Louis nightclubs with her sister. In a venue called Club Manhatten, Ike Turner and his band 'Kings of Rhythm' would play live. Tina found herself in awe of the singer, and one night, was invited to perform on stage as a guest vocalist.
In 1960, Tina got her big break when, after a performer didn't show up, Ike asked her to record a track he had written. He had intended that the original artist should re-record the vocals at a later date, however, record executive Juggy Murray liked "A Fool in Love" so much that he paid $25,000 for the track, and persuaded Ike to let Anna star in his show. He did and gave her the stage name - Tina Turner - so he could replace her, and employ someone else if need be.
The pair enjoyed commercial success and eventually married, however, their relationship was extremely turbulent, ending in divorce, with Tina eventually re-inventing herself as a solo artist, where she went on to find international fame with a string of hits such as "What's Love Got to Do with It?," "Simply The Best," "Private Dancer," and "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)." As an acknowledgment of her achievements, in 1986, Tina Turner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
After opening in the West End in 2018, tickets to Tina - The Tina Turner Musical were hot property. The show was a complete sell-out for many months, going on to win awards in the UK, on Broadway, and globally as the show replicated its success. The raw energy generated from her songs filters through into the musical, which is a fitting tribute to Tina, and provides a lasting legacy to one of the greatest ever female Rock N' Roll artists.
