Addiction Rise During Pandemic is Not Limited to Substance Abuse

For the last 18 months, the world has been on hold; everyone went through quarantine in one way or another. The world faced an unprecedented virus that shut down nearly every part of daily life. The lockdowns and restrictions are still important and have saved innumerable amounts of lives. Still, this drastic change in our social structure has had some serious consequences as well. Sadly, one of the side effects of the limited social interaction coupled with the stress and uncertainty that the entire world faced has increased addiction problems across the board.

Addiction doesn't just happen with drugs or alcohol. Though substance abuse may be the most commonly talked about and acknowledged form of addiction, there are many other forms. Nearly anything can become an addiction under the right circumstances. One of the primary examples is food addiction.

Almost anyone can come up with an example of what people call comfort foods, a recipe that makes them feel good to prepare and eat. A dish that takes them back to a place in their life that's nostalgic and comfortable. In moderation, this is a lovely thing. Unfortunately, however, it can get out of hand.

"Self-medicating doesn't only come with substances, and people can and do self-medicate with food. Eating to feel better, eating impulsively, being unable to stop eating are all real things. So the level of addiction is just as real as any other addiction and still comes with life-altering problems." Said a spokesperson.

Sadly, those who struggle with their relationship with food found the time at home a challenge. Food was easy to access, with an abundance of delivery services flourishing during the lockdowns. On top of that, people had almost uninterrupted access to the fridge. As a result, anyone with emotional eating issues has been struggling.

A person's relationship with food is critical for their overall health. Overeating can lead to obesity, which opens the door to a host of health complications. Food addiction can also lead to more extreme eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.

"The relationship between a person and what they eat can be complex. For example, some people eat when they are stressed or when they get upset. But, really, anytime a person doesn't feel like they can reasonably control what, when, and how they eat, there isn't a healthy relationship with food."

In most addiction cases, psychological issues and driving factors have led to it becoming uncontrollable. Treating the addiction means treating the whole person. With food addiction healing the relationship with food is critical for a person's overall health. Treatments can include individual therapy to understand what caused the addiction and education and classes to better understand what it means to eat healthily.
