Plans to participate in an interprovincial league for 2022 are taking shape

Edmonton, Alberta Jun 10, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - The Edmonton Scottish Society is extremely proud to announce that its senior women's and men's programs are launching semi-professional teams, with the goal of participating in an interprovincial league for the 2022 Season.

On the women's side, Edmonton Angels Scottish SC are the most successful women's team in Canadian soccer history, having won 9 Jubilee Trophies, including 5 consecutive triumphs between 1982 and 1986. Established in 1909, men's team Edmonton Scottish SC won their 1st national title in 2016, having reached the Challenge Trophy final on three other occasions since their first entry into the competition in 1972.

In addition to their national success at the amateur level, both the women's and men's teams are recognized as Organisations of Distinction by the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame.

The coaching and management team of the women's program will include Canada Soccer legend and Hall of Famer, Janine Helland, former NAIT Ooks head coach, Carole Holt, and youth club PDP coach, Nick Holt. Meanwhile, former FC Edmonton manager Jeff Paulus will lead the men's program, alongside current AMSL gaffer, Kevin Poissant. Steve Parsonage will round out the coaching staff as GK Coach for both squads.

"These semi-professional teams are the culmination of the work and dreams of Stuart Brown and Hamish Black, who both committed decades of personal time towards our women's and men's programs," expressed Helland. "The Edmonton Angels have always been at the forefront of women's soccer development and the ability to offer an elite level of training and competition at home to our players will help us build upon that legacy."

"With a growing need to bridge the gap between grassroots and professional soccer, it made sense to introduce another level of play into our senior pathway. This will allow us to better support our U23 players and promote them nationally," said Paulus.

Poissant added, "we are very excited to bring semi-pro soccer to South Edmonton, and look forward to supporting our sport and cultural community with continued facility development on our Society's grounds, including a new clubhouse, micro-stadium, and amenities to support our Edmonton Soccer Dome."

Although a decision on where the teams will play in 2022 will not be made until the end of the year, a series of semi-pro friendlies and signings will be announced within the next week. In the meantime, the women's and men's programs will continue to field squads in AMSL and EDSA competitions.
