Violent Protests In Greece Sends Markets Tumbling

The markets extended its losses during the midday with the Dow plummeting 171 points to 11,904 as protests in Greece turned violent. Nasdaq tumbled 40 points to 2637.

On the upside

Ener1 (Nasdaq: HEV) and the Russian Federal Grid Company will demonstrate a fully operational, lithium-ion, distributed energy storage system at the 15th annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Shares of Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) continued rising after the company began taking pre-orders for the Toshiba Thrive Tablet yesterday.

China Medical Technologies (Nasdaq: CMED) major shareholder Chengxuan purchased 110,000 American Depositary Shares of the company in the open market and will purchase additional shares.

On the downside

Owens-Illinois (NYSE: OI) blamed higher expenses for lowering its second quarter guidance.

Scotts Miracle-Gro (NYSE: SMG) warned that full year results will miss analyst expectations due to inclement weather.

Aveo Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: AVEO) will raise approximately $100.6 million through the sale of 5.8 million shares of stock at the discounted price of $17.50.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 4 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 3 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks dropped 9 points to 784.
