Pennsylvania American Water Extends Application Deadline for Scholarship Program

Pennsylvania American Water today announced that the application deadline has been extended until March 11, for its 2010-2011 Stream of Learning Scholarship Program. The company established the program to provide scholarship assistance to students living in Pennsylvania American Water’s service areas who are interested in pursuing careers in the water and wastewater industry.

With severe winter weather affecting many schools and closing classrooms across the state, Pennsylvania American Water extended the deadline to give students more time to compile the necessary information to submit their applications.

The company will award scholarships of $2,000 each to 10 students who are selected through the program’s application process. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must currently live in one of Pennsylvania American Water’s service areas. (Students can attend college outside of the company’s service territory.)
  • Students must plan to attend a two- or four-year college or technical school.
  • Students must plan to study environmental science, environmental engineering, biology or chemistry.

“The Stream of Learning Scholarship Program helps our company and our industry attract bright, talented young people who are looking to dedicate themselves to maintaining public health, protecting the environment and promoting economic development,” said Kathy L. Pape, president of Pennsylvania American Water.

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and will receive their awards in May. Family members of Pennsylvania American Water employees are not eligible.

In December, the company mailed scholarship brochures and applications to high school guidance counselors throughout its service territory. Applications can be downloaded from the company’s Web site at www.pennsylvaniaamwater.com and must be postmarked by March 11, 2011.
