Revenue growth

Reviewing a company’s long-term revenue performance reveals insights into its quality. Any business can experience short-term success, but top-performing ones sustain growth for years.

With $380.4 million in revenue over the past 12 months, IonQ is a small player in the business services space, which sometimes brings disadvantages compared to larger competitors benefiting from economies of scale and numerous distribution channels. On the positive side, it can grow faster because it has more room to expand.

IonQ’s annualized revenue growth of 271% over the last five years was strong, indicating high demand.

IonQ quarterly revenue

Long-term growth matters most, but within business services, a half-decade historical view may miss recent innovations or disruptive industry trends. IonQ’s annualized revenue growth of 219% over the last two years is below its five-year trend, but the results still suggest healthy demand. IonQ year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, IonQ reported year-on-year revenue growth of 336%, and its $173.8 million in revenue beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 37%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 91.8% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a deceleration versus the last two years. Still, this is a strong growth projection and implies the market sees success for its products and services.

Adjusted operating margin

Adjusted operating margin is a key measure of profitability. Think of it as net income (the bottom line) excluding the impact of non-recurring expenses, taxes and interest on debt – items less connected to business fundamentals.

IonQ’s high expenses have contributed to an average adjusted operating margin of negative 232% over the last five years. Unprofitable business services companies require extra attention because they can be vulnerable when conditions deteriorate.

On the positive side, IonQ’s adjusted operating margin rose over the last five years, as its revenue growth gave it operating leverage. Still, it will take much more for the company to reach long-term profitability.

IonQ trailing 12-month operating margin (non-GAAP)

In Q3, IonQ generated a negative 165% adjusted operating margin.

Earnings per share

Revenue trends explain a company’s historical growth, but the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) points to the profitability of that growth. For example, a company could inflate its revenue through excessive spending on advertising and promotions.

IonQ’s losses deepened over the last four years as its EPS dropped 35.8% annually. Diminishing earnings warrant close attention as they could imply changing secular trends and preferences.

IonQ trailing 12-month EPS (non-GAAP)

As with revenue, examining EPS over a more recent period can provide insight into an emerging theme or development for the business.

IonQ’s two-year annual EPS declines of 14.6% show it’s still underperforming. These results were poor across periods, but its success on other measures of financial health suggests IonQ could generate earnings growth in the future.

In Q3, IonQ reported adjusted EPS of negative $0.29, down from negative $0.17 in the same quarter last year. Despite falling year on year, EPS easily beat analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects IonQ to perform poorly. Analysts forecast its full-year EPS will decline from negative $1.19 to negative $1.38, according to S&P. This is unusual as its revenue and operating margin are anticipated to increase, signaling the fall likely stems from “below-the-line” items such as taxes.

Key takeaways from IonQ’s Q3 results

IonQ delivered a solid quarter, with revenue well above analysts’ consensus estimates and full-year revenue guidance also ahead of Wall Street’s consensus. Those were the key positives in the report. Shares rose 2.3% to $27.16 immediately after the results.

IonQ had a solid quarter, but one earnings result doesn’t necessarily make the stock a buy. The latest quarter is only one piece of the longer-term business quality picture. Business quality, combined with valuation, can help determine whether the stock is a buy. For more on IonQ, read the full research report here (it’s free).
