According to data State Farm released in January 2026, more than 20,000 frozen-pipe and water-damage claims were filed nationally from 2024 through mid-2025, totaling over $628 million in paid losses, with average claim payments exceeding $30,000. In response to those figures, Kraken Bond is directing attention to its pipe thread sealant line as a preventive step for threaded plumbing connections before winter temperatures arrive.
Threaded joints fail differently than straight pipe runs. The thread itself creates a spiral gap between fittings, and even a properly torqued connection leaves microscopic voids where water can migrate under pressure. When that trapped water freezes and expands, it forces those gaps open further, turning a connection that held for years into a slow leak or a sudden failure at the first hard freeze. Corrosion at the threads compounds the problem over time, widening the same gaps the cold exploits.
Thread sealant and thread tape solve this differently. Tape relies on layers of PTFE wrapped around the threads, which can bunch, shred, or leave gaps at the fitting's irregular high and low points. A paste-type sealant instead flows into those irregularities before curing, filling the full thread profile rather than just wrapping around it. That distinction matters most on older or worn fittings, where thread tolerances are no longer uniform and a tape wrap is more likely to miss a gap.
Among the products Kraken Bond is featuring is Kraken Bond KS 43, a medium-strength, thixotropic formulation. The thixotropic property means the sealant stays where it is applied during assembly rather than migrating into the pipe's interior, which matters on smaller-diameter lines where excess material could otherwise restrict flow. KS 43 is certified to NSF/ANSI 61-G, a standard that requires the cured sealant to pass extraction testing confirming it does not leach contaminants into water it contacts, which is why the certification specifically covers use in potable water systems rather than only non-potable applications. The formulation is also designed to resist seizing and galling, the bonding that can occur between metal threads over time, so that a sealed fitting can still be loosened and serviced months or years later without damaging the threads.
The guidance applies to two groups heading into the colder months. Plumbers and contractors can incorporate thread sealant into routine winterization calls, while homeowners can apply it to accessible threaded fittings in basements, crawl spaces, and exterior spigot lines, where pipes are least insulated from falling temperatures.
"A tape wrap can look secure and still leave a path for water to find," said a spokesperson for Kraken Bond. "A properly applied thread sealant fills that path before it becomes a problem, and using one that is certified for potable water gives contractors and homeowners a solution that works in the plumbing lines that actually matter."
