Travellers planning a September road trip through Greece will pay 115 percent more for the same category of car on the small island of Limnos than in Athens, according to the first Greek Islands Car Rental Price Index published by comparison service Speed Rent a Car Greece.
The index is based on 11,616 live rental offers collected across 19 Greek pick-up points for an identical search: a small or compact car, seven days, one driver aged 35, prices in euro. Only offers available to book at the moment of collection were counted.
The cheapest place to rent proved to be Athens, at a median of EUR 182 for the week, or EUR 26 per day. The most expensive was Limnos in the northern Aegean at EUR 391, followed by Milos at EUR 359 and Samos at EUR 341. Across the whole sample, island pick-up points were 44 percent more expensive than mainland ones.
Size, not fame, drives the price. Mykonos and Santorini - the two destinations travellers expect to be the most expensive - came in at EUR 233 and EUR 249 for the week, cheaper than eight lesser-known islands. Crete, with the largest fleet in the sample at more than 2,900 offers between Heraklion and Chania, was the cheapest island of all at EUR 220.
"The pattern is competition, not glamour," said Nikos Vlachos, founder of Speed Rent a Car Greece. "Mykonos has dozens of suppliers fighting for the same summer week, so prices stay honest. Limnos or Karpathos may have five. A traveller who assumes the famous island is the expensive one usually has it backwards."
The deposit is the hidden cost
The index also measured the security deposit - the amount a supplier blocks on the main driver's card at pick-up and releases after the car is returned undamaged. It averages EUR 918 across Greece, more than three times the median cost of the rental itself.
Athens carries the highest average block at EUR 1,060, followed by Milos at EUR 1,055. The lowest, on Naxos, is still EUR 833.
Cars that require no deposit at all remain rare: 745 of the 11,616 offers analysed, or 6.4 percent. On six of the nineteen destinations - Skiathos, Naxos, Karpathos, Samos, Chios and Limnos - the index found no deposit-free cars at any price. The best-supplied destinations were Chania on Crete at 12 percent and Heraklion, Santorini and Lesvos at 10 percent.
"For a family arriving with a fixed holiday budget, EUR 900 disappearing from the card at the desk is the difference between a comfortable week and a tight one," said Eleni Pappa, who leads supplier quality at the company. "It is also the number that is hardest to find before booking. It sits in the conditions, not in the headline price, and that is exactly why we started measuring it."
What travellers can do
The index suggests three practical checks before booking a car in Greece: compare the deposit alongside the daily rate, since a cheaper headline often carries a larger block; check whether the island is served by many suppliers or few, because thin markets price higher and sell out earlier; and book small-island rentals further ahead than mainland ones, where late availability keeps prices in check.

Methodology
Data was collected in a single search window for pick-up on 1 September 2026 and return on 8 September 2026, at 19 airport and city locations across Greece. Prices are medians for the small and compact categories, in euro, including taxes and mandatory fees as displayed at search time. Deposit figures are averages of the amounts stated in the offer conditions, excluding deposit-free offers. Rental prices in Greece change daily with availability; the index describes the market at the moment of collection and does not represent a fixed rate.
