WINNIPEG, MANITOBA: After years of growing demand for lab-created diamonds, Winnipeg jeweller Omori Diamonds is noticing a change in what its customers are asking for. The father-and-son jewellery design team says sales of natural diamonds have increased significantly, suggesting that some buyers may be returning to naturally mined stones.
For roughly six years, Omori Diamonds saw lab-grown diamonds become an increasingly popular option, particularly for engagement rings. Lab-created diamonds offer the same essential physical properties as natural diamonds while allowing buyers to purchase a larger stone at a significantly lower price. Omori continues to offer and recommend both natural and lab-grown diamonds depending on each customer's preferences and budget.
More recently, however, the company has noticed substantially more customers choosing natural diamonds.
"We've always tried to give our customers both options and explain the differences without pushing them in one direction," said Chris Omori, co-owner of Omori Diamonds. "Lab-created diamonds are still a great choice for many people, but we've definitely seen renewed interest in natural diamonds. More customers are coming in specifically looking for a natural stone, which is a noticeable change from what we were seeing a few years ago."
For some buyers, the appeal of a natural diamond may also come down to rarity and symbolism. Formed over billions of years, natural diamonds can carry a sense of history and permanence that remains meaningful for engagement rings, anniversary gifts, and other milestone jewellery.
Omori Diamonds does not see the renewed interest in natural stones as the end of the lab-grown diamond market. Instead, the company believes the two options are increasingly serving different priorities among jewellery buyers.
