Lights, Camera, Oakland: The New Film Mecca with Hilarious Comedy, ‘Donna and Ally’ Set to Shine

By: Get News
Another Oakland-based film is set to release soon. Donna and Ally is an edgy and brilliant new comedy that raises awareness of women suffering from PMDD. Donna and Ally is currently in post-production.

Oakland CA located in the SF Bay Area, is currently one of the hottest filming locations. With the premieres of Fremont, Earth Mama, and Fairyland, the Bay Area was well-represented at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Sundance reported Oakland’s Boots Riley received the renowned Bay Area call to attention as the audience erupted with “yee!” and “yadadamean.” The Bay Area has a distinct culture reflected in its art, and they are proud to feature Donna and Ally as a must-see, hilarious road movie about two Oakland strippers on the run.

The days of needing to be in Hollywood to get anything made are long gone. Now, Oakland is the city to be in for bold filmmaking. Oakland’s diverse voices address relatable issues that are rarely explored on screen. For example, filmmaker Aquis Bryant (also appearing in Donna and Ally) produced a blockumentary called “Hood 2 Hood the Blockumentary,” traveling to 27 of America’s toughest neighborhoods and conducting a series of intimate interviews. The Bay Area is also proud to host Mistah F.A.B. and his uncle, “Unc,” with the Unc and Fab show, which premiered at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater on January 31, 2023. It introduces a new and exciting series format and is definitely worth checking out.

Donna and Ally continues the Oakland tradition of edgy, bold films with a story to tell and a central message that resonates with real people, notably underclass girls and women with mental health disorders. Bay Area filmmakers are pushing the envelope with films like Donna and Ally, which may offend and provoke in equal measure. This film may spark a spectrum of controversy and the audience are here for it.

At its core, Donna and Ally is a comedy about two delinquents turned small-time criminals determined to become “somebodies.” The girls become exotic dancers, but Donna’s monthly rage gets them fired from every last club in Oakland. During their all-is-lost moment, they discover a hidden talent that helps them become successful entrepreneurs: becoming “domino matrix,” a hood version of a dominatrix.

Donna and Ally is said to embody the creative authenticity found in the Bay. Oakland’s geographical diversity, combined with its fascinating culture and people, brings creativity that is hard to find elsewhere. Unconstrained by the need to fit in, Oakland films tell stories of affluence, poverty, crime, money, and everything in between. Oakland is beautiful, and occasionally troubled.

“Keep an eye out for this film because one thing is certain: Donna and Ally is hella funny,” affirms Writer/Producer Cousin Shy. “Oakland and the Bay Area filmmakers are pushing the envelope to create edgy and brilliant films that don’t require Hollywood’s approval. All you have to do is get out there and make it happen. We hope the people of our city will support this project and appreciate what we’ve accomplished.”

Donna and Ally will premiere this fall.
