A soldier in World War II, Hastings dreamed of Tipton's, his favorite barbecue restaurant, once located in Tulsa, and vowed to design a grill that would produce ribs as good as Mr. Tipton's. Upon returning from active duty, Hastings drew up the design and then teamed up with a friend, Gus Baker, a welder, who constructed the grill. Not long after, friends requested to purchase one of their own. Hastings was a true pioneer, innovating the first covered backyard charcoal grill that is still being sold today. He is quoted in his book saying, "Hasty-Bake, I'm proud to say, helped pioneer the art of 'covered cooking,' … Without the hood, a Hasty-Bake is just another brazier."
