Liquid handling has always been an important part of life science laboratories. While simple syringes and vessels have been in use for hundreds of years, the introduction of the micropipette in the 1960s significantly improved laboratory efficiency. Over time, the design of the micropipette has continually improved to improve accuracy and repeatability, while preventing cross-contamination of samples.
Over the last few decades, liquid handling has been integrated into automated laboratory systems. Multichannel liquid handling systems have allowed multiple processes to be combined to streamline overall functions. Non-contact liquid handling systems have had to overcome the extreme challenges of working with nanoliter volumes, and is an integral part of “lab on a chip” technology for a variety of applications.
