As of early July, at least one person has died and nearly two dozen others have been hospitalized by a new Listeria outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated that cases have been reported in 10 different states. These states include Colorado, Minnesota, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kansas, Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts. It is believed the source of the outbreak is ice cream sold only in Florida.
“Foods can become contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytoenes and can cause a serious infection known as listeriosis,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Listeria has been associated with a variety of foods, including milk and cheese, but has also been associated with fruits, vegetables, and meats. EMSL's laboratories provide services to food manufacturers to help identify Listeria and other foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli. Additionally, EMSL offers a wide array of sampling supplies.”
