Peabody Energy (BTU) Q3 2026 highlights:

  • Revenue $1.10 billion vs S&P analysts’ consensus estimates of $1.05 billion (8.3% year-on-year growth, 4.9% beat)
  • EPS (GAAP) -$0.27 vs analysts’ consensus estimates of -$0.11 (significant miss)
  • Operating margin -3.9%, up from -8% in the same quarter last year
  • Free cash flow -$61.2 million, down from $5.8 million in the same quarter last year
  • Market capitalization $2.52 billion

"The third quarter demonstrated improving momentum across the portfolio with all segments reporting positive Adjusted EBITDA while our seaborne operations benefited from higher pricing. During the quarter, we worked through higher-cost faulted conditions at Centurion, which slowed advance rates, although the mine still reached its third quarter sales targets," said Jim Grech, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, our priorities remain operating safely, clearing the faulted zone at Centurion, and improving free cash flow as seaborne markets remain strong."

Revenue growth

Cyclical sectors like energy often flatter weaker operators during favorable price environments, but a longer-term lens separates those from businesses that can consistently perform across market cycles. Over the last five years, Peabody Energy grew its revenue at a tepid 8% compounded annual growth rate, falling short of the standard for the energy upstream and integrated energy sector.

Peabody Energy quarterly revenue

Energy cycles can be long enough that a single five-year period can still reflect one price environment, which is why an additional, decade-long view can help capture through-cycle performance. Peabody Energy grew over the past five years but relinquished those gains over the last ten years, as its revenue fell by 1.1% annually.

This quarter, Peabody Energy reported year-on-year revenue growth of 8.3%, and its $1.10 billion in revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 4.9%.

Adjusted EBITDA margin

Peabody Energy was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average EBITDA margin of 23% was weak for an upstream and integrated energy business.

Peabody Energy’s EBITDA margin decreased by 31.9 percentage points over the last year. Its poor performance shows that costs were rising and it couldn’t pass them on to customers.

Peabody Energy trailing 12-month EBITDA margin

This quarter, Peabody Energy generated an EBITDA margin of 5%, down 4.8 percentage points year on year. This contraction shows it was less efficient because its expenses grew faster than its revenue. Adjusted EBITDA fell short of Wall Street’s consensus estimates.

Cash flow

Adjusted EBITDA shows how profitable a company’s existing “rock” is before financing and reinvestment, while free cash flow, or FCF, shows how much value remains after paying to replace those wells. Because production declines over time, strong EBITDA can coexist with weak FCF if drilling is expensive or declines are steep. FCF therefore captures both operating efficiency and the cost of sustaining production.

Peabody Energy has shown decent cash profitability, giving it some flexibility to reinvest or return capital to investors. The company’s free cash flow margin averaged 8.8% over the last five years, slightly better than the broader energy upstream and integrated energy sector.

The level of free cash flow is important, but its durability across cycles is just as critical. Consistent margins are far more valuable than volatile swings driven by commodity prices.

Peabody Energy’s ratio of quarterly free cash flow volatility to West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, crude price volatility over the past five years was 15.2 (lower is better), indicating that its cash generation is far more sensitive to commodity-price swings than most peers. This elevated volatility limits its access to capital in downturns and makes it unlikely to act as a consolidator when weaker competitors come under pressure.

Why compare Peabody Energy’s free cash flow with commodity prices rather than its revenue or EBITDA with WTI? What ultimately matters is not how much revenue or profit it earns when prices are high but how much cash it can generate when prices are low. Free cash flow is the superior metric because it includes everything from hedging effectiveness to growth and maintenance capex to management behavior during good times and bad.

Peabody Energy trailing 12-month free cash flow margin

Peabody Energy had negative free cash flow of $61.2 million in Q3, equivalent to a negative 5.6% margin. The company’s cash burn increased meaningfully year on year and is a deviation from its longer-term margin, indicating it is a seasonal business that must build up inventory during certain quarters.

Key takeaways from Peabody Energy’s Q3 results

Peabody Energy’s sizable revenue beat was offset by an EPS miss, leaving room for a better quarter overall. Revenue came in well above analysts’ consensus estimates, but earnings fell short. Shares edged lower 1.7% to $20.33 immediately after the results.

Peabody Energy had a tough quarter, but the latest results are only one piece of the longer-term business quality picture. Quality, combined with valuation, can help determine whether the stock is a buy. For more on Peabody Energy, read our full research report here (it’s free).
