TechnipFMC (FTI) Q3 2026 highlights:

  • Revenue $2.90 billion vs S&P analysts’ consensus estimates of $2.79 billion (9.4% year-on-year growth, 3.9% beat)
  • Adjusted EPS $1.05 vs S&P analysts’ consensus estimates of $0.88 (19.4% beat)
  • Adjusted EBITDA $627.8 million vs analysts’ consensus estimates of $601.7 million (21.7% margin, 4.3% beat)
  • Operating margin 19.5%, an increase from 15% in the same quarter last year
  • Free cash flow margin 16.2%, similar to the same quarter last year
  • Market capitalization $28 billion

Pferdehirt concluded, “The robust pipeline of opportunities supports our expectation for further growth, and if we extend our view to include 2027, we expect Subsea orders over the next five quarters to be at least $14.5 billion. The momentum in order growth should also lift the quality of our inbound, with substantially more Subsea 2.0®, iEPCI®, and direct awards expected in the year ahead. We also believe this marks the beginning of a sustained wave of activity that will extend beyond the end of the decade.”

Revenue growth

Cyclical industries such as energy can make mediocre companies look great for a time, but a long-term view reveals which businesses can actually withstand and adapt to changing conditions. TechnipFMC’s revenue grew at a sluggish 5.1% annualized rate over the last five years, falling short of the standard for the energy upstream and integrated energy sector.

TechnipFMC quarterly revenue

Energy cycles can be long enough that a single five-year period can still reflect one price environment, which is why an additional, decade-long view can help capture through-cycle performance. TechnipFMC’s performance shows it grew over the past five years but relinquished its gains over the last ten years, as its revenue fell by 1.2% annually.

This quarter, TechnipFMC reported year-on-year revenue growth of 9.4%, and its $2.90 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 3.9%.

Adjusted EBITDA margin

Adjusted EBITDA margin is an important measure of profitability for the sector and accounts for the gross margins and operating costs mentioned previously. Unlike operating margin, it is not distorted by accounting conventions around reserves, drilling costs and assumptions on commodity consumption from the well or basin. Adjusted EBITDA highlights the economic reality of how much cash the rock produces before the capital structure (debt service) and the drilling budget (capex) are considered.

TechnipFMC was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average EBITDA margin of 14.9% was among the worst in the energy upstream and integrated energy sector.

On the positive side, TechnipFMC’s EBITDA margin rose by 9.8 percentage points over the last year.

TechnipFMC trailing 12-month EBITDA margin

In Q3, TechnipFMC generated an EBITDA margin of 21.7%, up 2.1 percentage points year on year. This increase was a positive development and shows improved efficiency. Its adjusted EBITDA beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 4.3%.

Free cash flow

Adjusted EBITDA shows how profitable a company’s existing wells are before financing and reinvestment decisions, but free cash flow shows how much value remains after paying the cost of replacing those wells. In upstream energy, production naturally declines over time, so companies must continuously reinvest just to stand still. A producer can report strong EBITDA margins yet generate little or no free cash flow if its wells decline quickly or if new drilling is expensive. Free cash flow therefore captures not only how efficiently a company produces hydrocarbons today, but also how costly it is to sustain that production into the future.

TechnipFMC has shown strong cash profitability, giving it the option to reinvest or return capital to investors. The company’s free cash flow margin averaged 10.3% over the last five years, better than the broader energy upstream and integrated energy sector.

While the level of free cash flow margins is important, their consistency matters just as much.

TechnipFMC’s ratio of quarterly free cash flow volatility to WTI crude price volatility over the past five years was 9 (lower is better), indicating reasonable insulation from commodity swings.

Why assess stability against commodity prices using free cash flow rather than compare revenue or EBITDA with WTI for TechnipFMC? What ultimately matters is not how much revenue or profit a company earns when prices are high but how much cash it can generate when prices are low. Free cash flow is the superior metric because it includes everything from hedging effectiveness to growth and maintenance capex to management behavior during good times and bad.

TechnipFMC trailing 12-month free cash flow margin

TechnipFMC’s free cash flow was $469.7 million in Q3, equivalent to a 16.2% margin. This cash profitability was in line with the comparable period last year and above its five-year average.

Key takeaways from TechnipFMC’s Q3 results

TechnipFMC delivered a positive Q3, with revenue topping analysts’ consensus estimates and EPS also beating Wall Street’s consensus. Those beats were key positives for the quarter. Shares rose 2% to $72.88 immediately after the report.

TechnipFMC had a solid quarter, but the investment case depends on the bigger picture. When deciding whether to buy the stock, consider valuation and business quality as well as the latest earnings. For more on TechnipFMC, read our full research report here (it’s free).
