What happened?

Shares of insurance holding company Globe Life (NYSE: GL) fell 3.4% in the morning session after the company reduced its full-year 2026 earnings outlook and posted a drop in third-quarter net income.

According to a company press release, Globe Life reported that third-quarter 2026 net income fell to $4.62 per diluted share from $4.73 in the prior-year period, while net operating income reached $4.84 per share compared to $4.81 a year earlier. Globe Life also lowered its full-year 2026 net operating income forecast to between $15.35 and $15.65 per diluted share from a previous projection of $15.55 to $15.95 per share. The company attributed the guidance cut to an underwriting loss of approximately $16 million at Evry Health and roughly $7 million in excess Medicare Supplement claims tied to processing delays at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The combination of contracting quarterly profit and elevated claims expenses raised investor anxiety regarding underwriting profitability across the insurer's health units.

The shares were trading at $163.50, down 3.6% from the previous close.

What is the market telling us

Globe Life’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 1 move greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock dropped 7.2% on the news that the company reported second-quarter earnings that met Wall Street's estimates but failed to excite investors. Revenue rose 6.7% year on year to $1.6 billion, roughly in line with estimates of $1.59 billion.

Net premiums earned also matched expectations, coming in at $1.30 billion. On the bottom line, GAAP earnings per share of $3.65 narrowly beat expectations of $3.64. Despite the company meeting estimates, the quarter lacked the upside surprises needed to drive the stock higher. The market's negative reaction likely reflected broader concerns over the company's long-term fundamentals, including a tepid 4.8% annualized revenue growth over the last five years and a historical decline in book value per share. Ultimately, an in-line quarter was not enough to satisfy investors, prompting a sell-off.

Globe Life is up 18.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $163.50 per share, it is still trading 12.1% below its 52-week high of $186.02 from August 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Globe Life’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,754.
