What happened?

Shares of regional banking company S&T Bancorp (NASDAQ: STBA) jumped 4.1% in the afternoon session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 earnings per share and revenue above analyst estimates. According to the company’s press release, S&T Bancorp reported record diluted earnings of $1.09 a share, up 19.8% from 91 cents a year earlier and 6.9% from $1.02 in the second quarter, and above the 99-cent consensus. Revenue of $107.79 million topped the $106.72 million consensus. Net income was $38.6 million, compared with $36.6 million in the prior quarter and $35.0 million a year earlier.

Net interest income rose to $93.1 million as the fully taxable-equivalent net interest margin expanded 7 basis points to 4.06%, on higher securities and loan yields — the loan yield increased 6 basis points to 5.95% — plus one extra day in the quarter. Average loans increased $61.2 million to $8.1 billion, and nonperforming assets declined $3.7 million to $36.5 million, or 0.45% of loans and other real estate. Earnings per share also got a lift from buybacks: since the fourth quarter of 2025 the company has repurchased 8.3% of its shares at an average price of $42.09, though it bought back none in the third quarter. Chief Executive Chris McComish called the quarter another one of record earnings per share, record revenue, and higher core profitability.

The shares were trading at $51, up 4.4% from the previous close.

What is the market telling us

S&T Bancorp’s shares are not very volatile and have had no moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 11 months ago when the stock gained 4.5% on the news that comments from a key Federal Reserve official boosted hopes for an interest rate cut. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams stated he sees “room for a further adjustment” in the near term, sparking a significant market rally. Following his remarks, the probability of the central bank cutting rates at its December meeting jumped from 39% to over 73%, according to the CME FedWatch tool. This positive sentiment provided relief to markets amid concerns over high valuations, particularly in AI-related stocks.

S&T Bancorp is up 30% since the beginning of the year, and at $51 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $53.36 from July 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of S&T Bancorp’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,619.

Every AI server needs specialized infrastructure the chip companies don’t make. High-speed cables. Power connectors. Thermal sensors. This 90-year-old company built a monopoly on it. The AI boom just started. This stock is still flying under the radar. Claim The Stock Ticker Here for FREE.
