What Happened?
A number of stocks fell in the afternoon session after capital-intensive growth equities experienced sharp sell-offs as elevated bond yields restricted market appetite for risk.
As reported by CNBC, rising Treasury yields put direct, outsized pressure on long-duration assets, because higher interest rates increase the discount rate applied to future corporate earnings, thereby diminishing the present value of the distant cash flows that early-stage drug and life sciences companies rely on to justify their high valuations.
Furthermore, CNBC analysts noted that investors are increasingly reassessing the impact of these elevated interest rates on overall economic growth and corporate debt-servicing capacity, which is particularly concerning for clinical-stage healthcare firms that must continuously tap debt markets to fund research and development.
Ultimately, CNBC observed that a broader flight to safety temporarily outweighed inflation fears across the market, prompting capital to aggressively exit these riskier, high-multiple healthcare assets and flow toward the relative stability of the Treasury market and blue-chip equities.
The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Zooming In On Novavax (NVAX)
Novavax’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 46 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Novavax and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 8 months ago when the stock gained 24.4% on the news that the company reported fourth-quarter financial results that significantly beat analyst expectations. Novavax announced revenue of $147.1 million, up approximately 67% from the prior year's quarter and well ahead of forecasts. The company also posted a surprise profit with earnings per share (EPS) of $0.11. This was a significant beat, as analysts had expected a loss of $0.49 per share, and it marked a notable turnaround from a loss of $0.51 per share in the same period of the previous year. The strong top-line growth and unexpected profitability drove investor optimism.
Novavax is up 57.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $11.20 per share, it is still trading 12.6% below its 52-week high of $12.82 from October 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Novavax’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $67.37.
