BOCA RATON, Fla. - Workers who lose job-based coverage often receive a continuation notice showing a monthly premium far higher than what they paid while employed. Health Insurance Now, a licensed health insurance brokerage that compares plans from more than 25 national carriers, is encouraging those workers to compare the cost of COBRA coverage against private plans before the election window closes.

Under federal rules, people who qualify generally pay the full cost of continued group coverage, including the share their employer once covered, plus an administrative fee. For many households, the first bill is a surprise. Health Insurance Now says that sticker shock prompts many people to start looking at alternatives after a layoff, a resignation or a cut in hours. The company adds that the election notice is the document to keep close, because it states the deadline for deciding.
“Nobody mentions at the moment of a layoff that COBRA insurance is one choice among several,” said Matthew Sechter, CEO of Health Insurance Now. “It can be the right answer, especially for someone who wants to keep their current doctors. But it deserves a side-by-side look with other options before the clock runs out.”

Private plans are not tied to a government enrollment calendar, the company says, and coverage can often begin within 24 to 48 hours of approval. Health Insurance Now’s agents compare options from more than 25 national carriers, including private PPO networks with nationwide access. The company notes that savings, eligibility and plan terms vary by state, plan and individual, and that some private plans exclude pre-existing conditions, which is why agents go through plan details with each applicant.
Health Insurance Now suggests that workers keep the election notice, note the deadline and request quotes before deciding whether to elect COBRA insurance. “The window is limited, so the worst thing to do is wait until the last day to start asking questions,” Sechter said. “If we can put real numbers in front of someone a week earlier, they make a calmer decision, whichever way they go.”
Applicants speak with licensed agents by phone, and quotes are typically available in minutes. The brokerage prepares and submits the enrollment paperwork on the applicant’s behalf, and support continues after enrollment so that customers have someone to call if they have questions about their plan.
