New Medtronic Leader Interview with Mike Genau
What is Your Background?
MIKE GENAU: Ive been in healthcare about twenty-five years, always in the medical device, capital equipment, both diagnostic and therapy side, with large and small companies. Actually it was just Mallinckrodt Medical back in the mid-nineties. So its gonna be great to reconnect with some of those products. Maybe some of those people. So its, its, its a great business. Very passionate about it.
Why Did You Pursue a Career In Healthcare?
MIKE GENAU: You know I have to go all the way back to my late teen years. I was actually a medic. I was an EMT. And so back then I took a real interest in, in contributing, I guess in the field in that sense by helping in the community where I lived. And from there my, my interest turned into a profession. And so I would say that was probably the starting point.
What Is a Key Area of Passion for You?
MIKE GENAU: Well, Im really passionate about what we can do to make an impact on, on human life, society in general. And so I think when you look at the technologies that Medtronic has, combined now with Covidien, we bring more to bear, more solutions for providers, better outcomes for patients. And so this whole notion of, what can we do to change quality of life thats aligned with our mission about alleviating pain, restoring health, and extending life, it really motivates us even further I think now, bringing these two great businesses together.
What Do You Think of This Deal and the New Medtronic?
MIKE GENAU: Its a great opportunity for all involved. Whether youre on the provider side, the payer side, or even as a patient, to look at a company that is committed to high quality care, improving outcomes, and extending life is something that all of us should be very passionate about. So I think, again, this combination really is unique. I think positions us well to deliver on those promises to our patients.
What Do You See as the Most Exciting Opportunities Ahead?
MIKE GENAU: Well healthcare is changing. Its a very dynamic landscape right now. We know the cost is not sustainable. We need to come up with new business models. And so weve got great products, great innovation. Well continue to invest there. But we need to do more. We need to look at how we take care of patients longitudinally. And so a care coordinated model that allows us to care for patients, whether it be inpatient or in the post-acute setting, really I think gives us the opportunity to grow our footprint and really uniquely position us with offerings that others just cant match.
What Are the Key Challenges We Will Need to Overcome?
MIKE GENAU: This is one of those things where size is important. Size is good. Weve got to just be sure that we deliver and make sure that size doesnt slow us down. Size doesnt get in the way of our ability to be nimble, delivering therapies and services and solutions at the customer level in all of the markets that we serve. I think we also need to take advantage of our size and our breadth and scale to provide more access into more markets. So its, its gonna be challenging but very exciting.

What Is Your Leadership Style?
MIKE GENAU: I enjoy being out with customers. And I think the teams that I have around me and the teams that well work with throughout the Americas, theyll feel and see that quite a bit. My preference is to be out and, and be closer to the front line. Not in a micro-managing kind of way but to make sure that we keep a finger on the pulse that I hear and see exactly what our customers are looking for. And that we make sure that we deliver. So the accountability around how we operate, those deliverables that are needed are also very, very important to our basic operating style. But I think just interacting with the, with the employees more directly across the region will be a big piece of how I get to know the business and get to know Covidien better.
What Activities/Interests Do You Enjoy Outside of Work?
MIKE GENAU: Well my kids are grown. So Ive got one out of college, two that are in college. So Ive got a little bit more time as we look to re-feather the nest a little bit, so to speak. And so we like to travel a lot. I play a lot of basketball. Try to stay active. And so I think family comes first. And so where I can spend time visiting my kids and family, thats where well focus now that we have a little bit more freedom.
